About: South America is a continent with an area of 17,840,000 sq km. The continent is located in the western hemisphere; major portion in the southern hemisphere; and with a small portion in the northern hemisphere. South America is 4th largest in area and 5th in population. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on west, Caribbean to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean on east. South America has world’s biggest rainforest and the largest river (Amazon),  and the highest mountain range outside Asia (the Andes). South America boasts of amazing remote islands like Easter Island, Galapagos Islands,  and many more. The continent also has the world’s tallest waterfall (the 979m Angel Falls in Venezuela) and one of the largest (Iguacu Falls in Argentina and Brazil).

Countries: The Continent comprises of 12 sovereign states and two non – sovereign states. The Falkland Islands- a British Overseas Territory, and the French Guiana- an overseas department of France  are the two non – sovereign states. Besides this, Trinidad and Tobago, the ABC islands of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Panama may also be considered part of South America. Brazil is the most populous country in the continent, where more than half of the continent’s population reside. Presently, Brazil has become the regional economic power of the South America and has also concentrated half of the region’s GDP.

Attractions: South America is well known for Machu Picchu and other Inca cities, which is famous for the  ruins of ancient civilizations. The Easter Island is a mystery in many tems and visited by the tourists in bulk from all over the world.  The cities of Buenos Aires, Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Bogota, Caracas, Santiago and many other are famous tourist destinations. These cities have traces of European architecture and modern architecture. South America has the oldest rock paintings in the Americas (at the Serra da Capivara), strong African heritage (in Rio , Salvador, and Montevideo)

Tourism and Entertainment: The big entertainment festivities in South America are Rio’s Carnival and Belem’s Cirio de Nazare. The Tango World Championship and the Vendimia festival in Argentina are the incredibly diverse and attractive culture of South American culture. South America is known for diverse cultures and one of the famous tourist destinations worldwide.
