Ban on river rafting in Rishikesh, June 2018

The Uttarakhand High Court has banned water sports, in the month of June 2018, which include white water rafting and paragliding in the state. The orders were issued citing safety and environmental concerns. The order is a big blow to adventure tourism in Uttarakhand state, as it is estimated that white water rafting in Uttarakhand generates a big revenue to the tune of Rs. 70-80 crores yearly. Apart from the revenue, the white water sport generates employment to approximately 10,000 people including cooks , guides, instructors, helpers, drivers and other workers.

This year, 2018, nearly 300 licenses were issued for rafting in Rishikesh and in this summer season nearly 450 boats were operating in Ganga.

As per the high court orders, the order isn’t permanent and would remain in place until the government comes up with an eco-friendly policy.

River rafting in Rishikesh is one of the famous adventure sports in Uttarakhand.  The sacred river Ganga has several amazing rapids along its course from Kaudiyala to Rishikesh.
