Char Dham transport rules during season (28th April, 2016): Every year Uttarakhand transport department issues green cards to commercial vehicles for Char Dham yatra routes. This year also the work of issuing the green cards has started from Monday (25th April, 2016). This exercise is done in order to check the vehicle fitness and eventually reduce accidents on the route.
As per the transport officials, every year around 10,000 vehicles travel the route to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, the four Dhams during the season. This year the commercial tourist vehicles from other states shall be given green cards for 15 days’ validity in comparison to 2 months’ validity of green card. It is advised to check the green card with your travel agent while visiting Char Dham shrines or Garhwal hilly region lying ahead Rishikesh, because no commercial vehicle shall be allowed to take the journey without green card in the mentioned places.
The movement of commercial vehicles shall be allowed between 4 AM to 8 PM. The commercial vehicles from other states cannot be given green card on the same day, as it takes one full day to get fitness check of the vehicle. So, it is always advised to get the green card made beforehand or wait at the office until the card is issued. This will erase the problems encountered by vehicles on route and check the rash driving. This year, the tourist season shall start from 9th May, 2016 when portals of Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath will open while the portal of Badrinath will open on 11th May, 2016. The season will conclude in the month of October – November.
The Char Dham shrine darshan (worshiping) starts from Yamunotri and is followed by Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The total days of the route is approximately 10 to 11 days. However, it is upon the tourist to visit all the four shrines or not. As per the internal sources, many prefer to visit only Badrinath or others like Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
