Orana NSW

About: Orana  region is located in central northern of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. As per the latest statics, the population of Orana was 113,824 people in June 2015. The total area of Orana is 198,561 sq km which is largest, 25% of total area, among all other regions in the state of NSW. The major towns are Dubbo, Cobar and Mudgee.

Origin: Orana means “welcome” in an Aboriginal language, perhaps used by local Wiradjuri group, but this is challenged. Orana name was established as an Australian Aboriginal word in 1948, though its original meaning is yet contested.

Local Government: The Orana region consists of 13 local government areas;  Dubbo Regional Council, Mid-Western Regional Council and the Shires of Bourke, Bogan, Cobar,  Brewarrina,  Wallington, Coonamble, Warren, Warubungle, Gilgandra, Narromine, and Walgett

Attractions: Orana is a popular destination for tourists and visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The popular destinations in the Orana region include Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Old Dubbo Gaol, Dundullimal Homstead, Dubbo Regional Botanical Garden, Buttler Falls Reserve etc.

Cities: The major cities / towns in Orana region are Dubbo, Mudgee, and Cobar.
