About: Australia and New Zealand are the most known countries in a wider region known as Australasia and Oceania. Oceania is the region comprising of the Australian continent and many other islands in the Pacific. The total no. of countries in Australian continent is 14 nations including New Zealand, Fiji and others. Australia, the smallest continent, is officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia. It is also the world’s sixth-largest country by total area. The neighbouring countries of Australia include Papua New Guinea; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; Indonesia and East Timor to the north; and New Zealand to the south-east.
Pre colonial era: Prior to the arrival of British, Australia was inhabited by the aborigines who used languages roughly 250 language groups. The establishment of first British settlement took place in the late 18th century after Australia was discovered by Dutch explorers in 1606. The country’s eastern half came under the suzerainty of Great Britain in 1770 and gradually started settling through penal transportation of the convicted to the colony of New South Wales (NSW) from 26 January 1788. The growth of population of the continent was steady in 18th century. The continent was further explored and subsequently many self governing colonies came into existence. In the beginning of 20th century the British government federated six colonies, forming the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. After the merger of all the six federations, Australia has been following the liberal democratic political system that follows the function of a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy.
Modern times: Australia is one of the wealthiest and developed countries in the world having the world’s 12th-largest economy. There are several amazing and wonderful places in this country. You can go to Blue Mountain, Great Barrier Reef or see the architectural beauty of Sydney Opera House. There are plenty of other wonders and beautiful tourist destinations in this country.
