Oceania is the region comprising of the Australian continent and many other islands in the Pacific. It is also the world’s sixth-largest country by total area. Pre colonial era: Prior to the arrival of British, Australia was inhabited by the aborigines who used languages roughly 250 language groups. The establishment of first British settlement took place in the late 18th century after Australia was discovered by Dutch explorers in 1606. The country’s eastern half came under the suzerainty of Great Britain in 1770 and gradually started settling through penal transportation of the convicted to the colony of New South Wales (NSW) from 26 January 1788. The growth of population of the continent was steady in 18th century. The continent was further explored and subsequently many self governing colonies came into existence. In the beginning of 20th century the British government federated six colonies, forming the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. After the merger of all the six federations, Australia has been following the liberal democratic political system that follows the function of a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy.
