Capital: Shimla, the capital of Himanchal Pradesh, is the largest city of the state. Shimla was declared as the summer capital of British India in 1864. After independence of India, Shimla became capital of Punjab and later became capital of Himanchal Pradesh in 1966.

Climate: The climatic conditions of Himanchal Pradesh vary according to altitude. The climate in various terrains is as follows:

Hot and sub-humid

Warm and temperate

900 m to 1800 m

Cool and temperate

1900 m to 2400 m

Cold glacial and alpine

2400–4800 m
